Wood putty vs wood filler

Although the terms wood putty and wood filler are sometimes used interchangeably, the two actually have different uses and properties. Unlike wood putty, wood filler is sandable and is therefore best used for patching interior unfinished wood. It is also non-adhesive and dries a lot faster.

How to use wood putty?

1. Using a standard putty knife, apply and press wood putty into the small hole you want to fix.
2. Once the hole is filled, remove any excess putty.
3. Wait several hours for it to dry.
4. Determine if the putty has dried by pressing your fingernail into it. If an indentation is made, you should let the material dry for an extended period of time.

Can you paint over wood putty?

As it is an oil-based product, a water-based paint should not be used over it. However, if only a small amount of wood putty is used and several days are given for it to dry, it can be painted over.
