Tips for using putty and fillers

Here are some best practices when using putty and fillers:

• When choosing a suitable product, check the maximum gap size recommended that the caulk can fill.
• Before caulking, you are advised to clean the surface thoroughly. It should be free from dirt, paint or grease.
• Apply with even pressure and ensure that the caulk is evenly spread.
• Clean any excess sealant with a damp cloth immediately after application.
• Allow the surface to skin completely before painting.
• Read the product labels carefully; different products require different amounts of time to skin and cure. The product should be sheltered from the rain until firmly skinned.
• Cured product should be cleaned up. Depending on the product you are using, there are several ways of cleaning up. Some methods include using a putty knife to cut or scrape, sanding, or softening with acetone before removal.
