Differences between wall putty and plaster

Homeowners often get confused between wall putty and plaster (also referred to as plaster of Paris or gypsum plaster).

However, unlike the former, plaster can only be used on interior walls. This is because it is not water-resistant and is prone to damage caused by rain. Additionally, it is much lower in strength and durability as opposed to wall putty.

 

Types of wall putty

White cement wall putty

• Made from a combination of cement, polymer, and minerals
• Can be used on interior and exterior walls
• High strength and durability
• Water-resistant

 

Acrylic wall putty

• Created using materials such as acrylic emulsion and additives
• Suitable for interior surfaces
• Lower strength
• Not as resistant to water as compared to white cement wall putty

How to use wall putty

1. Before applying the putty, ensure that the wall is free from any impurities such as dust, loose particles or grease.
2. Mix the wall putty and water as per product specifications until smooth.
3. Apply the first coat of the mixture to the wall using a putty knife.
4. Leave the putty to dry completely before using a piece of sandpaper to remove loose particles.
5. Apply a second coat of wall putty and use the sandpaper to smoothen the surface once it is dry.
